Seminar Security of Software Defined Networking and Network Functions Virtualization (4 CP)

Controlling and managing networks using proprietary networking devices like switches and routers are time-consuming and cumbersome. For keeping the increased complexity manageable, Software Defined Networking (SDN) has been developed which decouples the control plane of the devices from the data plane by utilizing the principles of “abstraction” and “modularity”. Rather than deploying only hardware switches/routers which are time-consuming and costly, Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) is a novel approach which complements SDN to create, deploy and maintain Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) for computing and communication, for example, vRouter, vFirewall, vEPC, vIMS, vIDS, vGateway. Towards this, several SDN and NFV platforms, tools, and architectures have already been developed and deployed.

The aim of this seminar is to analyze them for identifying the security threats (e.g., Spoofing, Tampering, Repudiation, Information disclosure, Denial of Service, Elevation of privilege) by using a pre-defined methodology.

In this seminar, the students will learn to

  •  follow a research methodology
  •  write their findings (6 – 8  pages using standard IEEE double column template)
  •  make a presentation (20 min)
  •  initiate a discussion (10 min)
  •  work independently (analyze a tool)
  •  exchange and discuss their findings
